A prototype is an average of similar things. One computer-graphic manipulation we do with faces is making prototypes of different groups, such as the average university student.
In the 1800s, Francis Galton used multiple photographic exposures like the example on the left to make average faces. Using a sophisticated computer-graphic method called prototyping, we can make averages of groups of faces like the example on the right.
